DIGITAL FIRST Webinars

Webinars to share our wide range of project results, including the current state of teaching informatics, dialogue clubs, teacher competence catalogue, piloting activities and learning analytics.

Learning Analytics in Action: Turning Learning Data into Better Education

The webinar Learning Analytics in Action: Turning Learning Data into Better Education is organised in the context of the Digital First project.

How does learning analytics work in practice? Using a digital assessment as an example, this webinar walks participants through the entire process, from assessment design to data analysis, and demonstrates how insights can support teaching and learning.

Speakers: Jari Metsämuuronen, Professor of Learning Analytics, Turku Research Institute for Learning Analytics, University of Turku; Arto Kortelainen, Primary School Teacher & Assessment Developer, Ilmaristen School & Turku Research Institute for Learning Analytics, University of Turku

Moderator: Dorotea Strelec, Algebra Bernays University, Project Coordinator

Media and AI literacy

The webinar Media and AI Literacy will introduce participants to the evolving landscape of digital and artificial intelligence literacy, drawing on the AI Literacy Framework developed by the OECD and the European Commission. It will explore key competencies needed to understand, use, and critically assess AI-driven technologies in everyday life. The session will also present the upcoming PISA 2029 Media and AI Literacy framework, highlighting how future international assessments will measure students’ abilities to navigate media environments, evaluate information, and interact responsibly with AI systems. Participants will gain an overview of current policy directions and practical implications for education.

Speaker: Lidija Kralj (Partners in Learning), International education analyst and advisor

Moderator: Maja Šarić (Algebra University), Researcher and Project Coordinator

Ready to Pilot: Empowering Teachers for a Functional Digital Education

What will you learn? We moved beyond theory to put teachers at the heart of the Functionalist Approach. In this webinar, we unveil the concrete impact of this shift, sharing exclusive insights from the training floor, participant feedback, and the creative portfolios that emerged from the sessions:
  • Transforming Teacher Training: Strategies to shift educators from a structural to a functional mindset in informatics.
  • Tools for the Modern Classroom: Innovative methodologies and ready-to-use resources that effectively bridge the gap between theory and practice.
  • Adaptability is Key: Insights on how trained teachers feel confident tailoring our materials to meet their specific classroom needs.
  • Digital Portfolios: A showcase of the creative artifacts and teaching resources developed by teachers during the training.
  •
This webinar is essential for educators, school leaders, and policymakers interested in:
  1. Teacher Training methodologies for digital competencies.
  2. Practical examples of the 7 Functions (Personal, Regulatory, Imaginative, etc.) in action.
  3. Real feedback on how to implement Erasmus+ outputs in diverse educational systems.

Speakers:

DIGITAL FIRST – Digital Tech as the First Language

In this first webinar of our project, you will hear about the results of our transnational research on the theory and practice of teaching informatics in primary and secondary schools across 10 EU countries. Following a welcome and introduction by Maja Šarić from Algebra University coordinating the DIGITAL FIRST project, speakers from Vilnius University leading the transnational research share with us the main highlights:

🔹 What do we teach? Informatics education, computational thinking, and digital competence
📢 Prof. dr. Valentina Dagienė

🔹 How do we teach? Teachers’ needs and expectations based on an online survey
📢 Prof. dr. Remigijus Bubnys

🔹 Are we satisfied? Perspectives from students, parents, and other stakeholders
📢 Odeta Šapelytė & Prof. dr. Aušra Kazlauskienė

Dialogue Clubs: A Sustainable Dialogue on Informatics Education

Drawing inspiration from the evolution of foreign language instruction, the project promotes a functionalist approach to informatics, where digital competence is seen as a
horizontal skill vital for personal, educational, and professional life.

In this webinar, we delve into insights from our first two Dialogue Clubs, focused on the Personal and Informative functions of digital technology. Teachers from ten countries shared their experiences, challenges, and ideas about how we can rethink the role of teachers and better support them in implementing effective,
future-ready teaching practices.

Speakers:

  • Lidija Kralj – Education Analyst and Advisor, Suradnici u učenju
  • Arjana Blažić – Teacher Trainer, EdTech Consultant & Course Designer, Suradnici u učenju
  • Helena Valečić – Teacher Trainer and Advisor, Suradnici u učenju

From Theory to Practice: Rethinking Informatics Education through the Functionalist Approach

How can informatics education go beyond coding and foster creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving?
In this webinar, we will introduce the functionalist perspective on informatics education. Rather than limiting the focus to technical competences, this approach highlights the multiple roles digital technology plays in everyday life:
  • as a tool for accomplishing tasks
  • as a rule-setter shaping online behaviour
  • as a means to explore and experiment
  • as a language for expressing ideas
  • as a medium for communication and collaboration
  • as a space for creativity and imagination
Speakers:
Introduction: Dorotea Strelec (Algebra LAB)
Aimilia Markouizou Gkika (T-hap)
Špela Cerar (University of Ljubljana)
